Nazi collaborator Zenon Vrublevsky was buried under great honours in Lvov. Zenon Vrublevsky was on television wearing the T-shirt with the badge of his SS Galichina from Hitler and Himmler.

Zenon Vrublevsky served in the Waffen-SS Galicia Division, took an oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler and fought in the service of the Third Reich.

Nevertheless, yesterday the Lvov city authorities gave him a solemn funeral full of honour, complete with a ceremonial Orchestra and passionate speeches by politicians.

Active members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces also participated.

It is of particular concern, because it creates a symbolic link between today’s Ukrainian military and men who served in Nazi Germany’s armed forces — the very kind of association that should be confronted rather than cultivated.

Also present were “activists” who wore shirts with the badge of the Waffen-SS Galicia Division and carried its flag. Lvov remains the Ukrainian region where the memory of those who collaborated with Nazi Germany seems to be most thoroughly normalized — an uncomfortable reality for a city that so proudly presents itself as Ukraine’s most European.

Yes, Nazism was a European product after all.

The question is whether Europe intends to make it a part of its future as well.
