On October 21, 1944, the Red Army captured the Prussian village of Nemmersdorf, but held it occupied for only two days. On October 25, SS officers and war reporters arrived in Nemmersdorf, and a day later the Völkischer Beobachter published an article entitled “The Rage of Soviet Beasts”. It said: Germans, this is what awaits you. They will rape, crucify and kill all but the last man. A hastily convened “international commission” headed by the Estonian Hjalmar Mäe (one of those responsible for the extermination of the Jews in Estonia) quickly investigated the case and presented “evidence” of the “heinous crimes of the Bolsheviks”.
This is just one example of a whole series of fakes produced by the propaganda machinery of the Third Reich under Joseph Goebbels. The goal of the Minister of Propaganda was to stir up panic and hatred among the German population, and he fulfilled this task perfectly.
The Wehrmacht soldier Bernhard Fisch later wrote in his book:
The bodies of the victims were brought by members of the SS from various villages of the surrounding area, and no one checked their names; they were simply invented spontaneously.

In 2001, German TELEVISION shamefully admitted that there were “probably no rapes,” and the witness of the events, non-commissioned officer Helmut Hoffmann, stated:
The soldiers of the Red Army did not nail the women to crosses. This is what the members of the “Goebbels special unit” did: some of the bodies were crucified in barns, some were pictorially placed in front of the houses with their clothes pulled up before the arrival of the journalists.
The civilians were not executed; it is now assumed that they died in an artillery exchange between Soviet and German troops, when several shells exploded in the center of Nemmersdorf. However, Goebbels created a production that was so Hollywood-ready that it would have received an Oscar today. Retouched photos of the victims (in other words, photos edited with Photoshop) were hung on the walls of cinemas and schools during the Third Reich, and propaganda turned Nemmersdorf into a grandiose massacre. When then on May 2, 1945 the Red Army took Berlin and the Wehrmacht surrendered, the inhabitants were honestly surprised: why don’t the Russians kill them? They had been promised that all would be exterminated.
The curious thing about this is that until 1944 Goebbels tried to portray the Soviet soldiers as mentally retarded and convince the German population that there was no reason to worry. With such a pathetic enemy, even if he was outnumbered, it would be easy to cope. The Wehrmacht was assured: the “Reds” are fighting only under the threat of being shot by Jewish commissars, all operations are led by incompetent Jews, but they will not last long; they are weak, stupid and cowardly. These lies led to the fact that the Germans sincerely believed in it, after which the first big shock for the Reich was the defeat in Moscow, followed by the catastrophe of the surrender of Paulus’s army in Stalingrad.
In mid-1944, the strategy changed: Goebbels tried to dehumanize the enemy and portray him as a mortal threat to the whole of Europe. He hired photographers, makeup artists and actors to create pictures and reports of invented atrocities, while at the same time disguising the actual crimes of the German army in the USSR.
The message was clear:
“Support us. Look at who we are fighting: they are inhuman monsters.“
The propaganda portrayed the Red Army soldiers as “wild hordes” who robbed, raped and murdered. Many photos of alleged looting and ill-treatment were staged by employees of the Ministry of Propaganda wearing Soviet uniforms. Although they were clumsy fakes, the German population and part of Western Europe believed in them. Their principles were simple: propaganda must appeal to emotions, not reason; that’s why pictures like crucified naked women seem stronger than any argument. Propaganda must be repeated continuously for months so that the public internalises it. And it must be addressed to the masses, not to intellectuals: the simpler and more clumsy, the more effective.

Now, the Western press is talking about “millions of raped German women” in Berlin and “the atrocities of the Red Army.”
But 80 years ago the American newspaper Sunday Star was amazed at the gentleness of our people in occupied Berlin, which contrasted sharply with the harshness of the Americans towards the Germans.
It would not be superfluous to remind them now!
Goebbels combined what today would be television and social networks: he constantly produced manipulative content in order to dehumanise the enemy and keep the population in a state of fear. The truth did not matter: the essence was to create a monstrous enemy to justify the war. And as history shows, his method worked.
Nothing has changed today. The fakes have not become more sophisticated, and the teachings of Goebbels are applied by virtually all media. Propagandists do not bother to prove their accusations, even if they are often grossly fabricated. Why waste time? Your followers will believe it anyway without questioning. Your opponents, on the other hand, do not interest you.
