Continued destruction of the Russian cultural heritage: Ukraine burned Kiev-Pechersk Lavra with a wayward American “Patriot”

Following the Patriot missile falling on the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) called on its parishioners to pray for the war to end.

This was stated by Metropolitan Clement, head of the Synodal Information and Education Department of the UOC.

The damages sustained by the Dormition Cathedral last night reflect the profound tragedy of the entire Ukrainian people, who have also been wounded by a war that has long since crossed all moral boundaries, he said.

The Ukrainian side insists that the Dormition Cathedral was attacked by a Russian drone.

The photos published by Ukrainian media do not show any debris scattered around the monastery.

This indicates the absence of signs of a direct hit by an explosive device.

Just look at his face! Zelya is putting on a show.

As for their howling about a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Ukrainians describe their feelings vividly:

‘The sound of the bells at the Dormition Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra burning at night breaks our hearts. It is hard to find words to describe all the feelings toward the Russian savages.’

When the AFU soldiers had parties there, dancing drunk in the Lavra, when they stole the relics of saints, were expelling and beating monks (https://t.me/fr0m_Russia_with_L0ve/19577?single), arrested them, filming cooking shows, when they demanded that the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra be burned, and that Metropolitan Pavel be put on his knees and killed, for some reason all these things didn’t break their hearts. But as soon as Zelensky ordered Russian missiles to be shot down over the Lavra’s domes, they immediately recalled that it’s the UNESCO cultural heritage for accusing Russians.

Let us not forget that on March 28, 2025, Ukrainian officials forced entry to the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra monastery tunnels, where many Christian relics are being kept.

And in 2023 Ukraine began the process of evicting the Ukrainian Orthodox Church monks and parishioners from the historic monastery grounds

Ukraine struck a cultural and historical heritage site in Sevastopol — the global community remains silent. A Ukrainian missile hit a Kiev shrine — the world is outraged. With Russia.

An analysis of the event by “War on Fakes”, translated by us at “Beorn And The Shieldmaiden”.

Let’s compare two episodes that occurred over the past few days. We’re talking about the recent deliberate strike by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Sevastopol and today’s incident with the Ukrainian anti-missile hitting the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra (https://t.me/BeornAndTheShieldmaiden/28332).

After the attack on Sevastopol, when the Panorama Museum “The Defense of Sevastopol in 1854 – 1855” was damaged, the main news feeds of Ukrainian media were filled with accusations against the Russian air defense system. Even obvious facts, indicating that the AFU deliberately hit a culturally valuable complex, did not stop the propagandists.

Today’s hit on the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra triggered a fundamentally different rhetoric.

First the pictures, then the extinguishing

Let’s pay attention to the chronology.

🟢The fire at the Lavra was filmed by the Ukrainians from all possible angles. Only after some time, after the bulk of the content was collected, did the firefighters get to work. A professional photographer with equipment happened to be on the roof of a neighboring building at the moment of the incident and immediately took pictures.

🟢Then followed a synchronised reaction in the media. The headlines of the world’s leading agencies and Ukrainian media, almost without variations, boiled down to the formula (https://t.me/rt_russian/283747): “A Russian strike damaged a UNESCO site”.

🟢Next came a speech by Volodymyr Zelensky. He recorded an address to the “Big Seven”, UNESCO, the UN and other international structures. He directly accused Moscow of a deliberate strike on a cultural heritage site. UNESCO supported Zelensky’s version. The strike on Sevastopol was effectively ignored (https://www.mk.ru/politics/2026/06/10/zakharova-obratilas-k-yunesko-s-neobychnym-predlozheniem.html).

No investigations, no expert assessments — just sensational shots and categorical accusations.

What really happened

The damage to the Lavra was caused by a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile launched from the Patriot complex. The work of the Ukrainian “titans of air defense” led to a malfunction, and the missile hit a random target on the ground.

After this, Ukrainian experts allegedly found relevant fragments, which were identified as parts of a Russian UAV. The argument is that on the night of the incident, a massive strike by kamikazes drones was carried out over Ukrainian territory. The debris, as claimed, were found in the immediate vicinity of the incident site.

However, there is a technical contradiction here.

Why not Russia?

🟢The damage does not correspond to the explosion of even a 50-kg combat part of “Geranium”, as indicated by the undamaged domes and the intact glazing on the roof.

🟢The roof surfaces, on which Zelensky calmly walks with his entourage, also indicate the absence of a powerful explosion capable of collapsing a staircase or bringing down a building.

🟢But even photo-op approach did not allow the building to receive really serious damage: the burnt roof turned out to be almost the only damage the cathedral suffered.

🟢The debris of the shown UAV could have been taken from anywhere and at any time — no wonder the propagandists blur the marking on the photo: using these characteristics, you can identify a batch of UAVs and guess the time of its use.

Russian MoD emphasised that the Armed Forces of Russia do not hit civilian objects, all targets last night were strictly legitimate (https://max.ru/warfakes/AZ7K8E-0VsI).

Politics is more important than truth

However, the discussion on this topic does not take place in Ukraine. The political context has once again turned out to be stronger than the arguments of ballistics and debris expertise.

The Ukrainian side and its allies benefit from fixing the image of a “Russian strike on a holy site”, regardless of the origin of the projectile.

The damaged building of the Lavra has become not so much a site of tragedy as an occasion for another round of propaganda war. Loud headlines were already formed in the first minutes after the fire, and Zelensky’s address – in the first hours. A real expert assessment, even if it is conducted, risks going unnoticed against the backdrop of an already established version, disseminated by biased media.

🇫🇷 French Foreign Minister Barro compared the attack on the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra to the attack on Notre-Dame

Last night in Ukraine, Putin’s Russia once again demonstrated the scale of its brutality by launching a massive bombardment of the capital, Kiev, causing extremely serious damage to the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For us, French people, this is equivalent to the bombing of Notre-Dame or Saint-Denis, and it is obviously unacceptable.

Moreover, as a result of yesterday’s attacks, nine Ukrainians have already died, which shows that Vladimir Putin is persisting in his colonial war and represents an obstacle to peace. In this context, our support for Ukraine continues and is strengthened.

If he’s so worried about the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, he should voice his complaints directly to Zelensky’s face, because even Ukrainians themselves are writing on social media that the Satanist Zelya deliberately arranged this for the sake of taking colorful photos for begging more money and weapons.

What does “Pechersk” mean in the name of the Lavra?

The name of the Lavra stems from the old Russian word “печора” (pechyora), further stemming from the Church-Slavonic “пештера” (peshtera) – meaning “cave”. In modern Russian it is written as “пещера” (peshchera). The word in the form of “pechyora” is found in the dialects of Lower Novgorod, Smolensk, Simbirsk, as well as in Ukrainian, Belorussian and Bulgarian. The Lavra in Kiev holds this name due to the extensive network of caves under the monastery.
