Newsflash: Biden approves of USA committing a war crime by supplying cluster munitions to their proxy war in Ukraine

Biden approves of USA committing a war crime by supplying cluster munitions to their proxy war in Ukraine.

Cluster munitions are prohibited by all possible conventions and their usage constitutes a war crime. That much was even stated by the Jen Psaki last year:

🇺🇸 Throwback to 2022: Jen Psaki says using cluster bombs is a war crime

Now that Washington has confirmed that it’s sending cluster munitions to Ukraine, it’s “obviously” not a war crime.

Yet, Biden green-lighted supplying Ukraine with cluster munitions from the American stockpiles, citing the fact that the USA has run out of other conventional 155mm artillery shells in their proxy war against Russia.

Cluster munitions make the land they’ve been used over dangerous for the future generations of civilians due to the fact that a certain percentage of the charges do not detonate and remain hidden in the ground for years or decades to come.

For the Pentagon this is business and nothing personal. A field test of several types of their cluster munitions.

Biden Administration to Supply Ukraine with Cluster Munitions in $800 Million Aid Package – AP

The Biden administration has decided to provide cluster munitions to Ukraine and is expected to announce on Friday that the Pentagon will send thousands as part of a new military aid package worth up to $800 million for the war effort against Russia, according to people familiar with the decision.

The decision comes despite widespread concerns that the controversial bombs can cause civilian casualties. The Pentagon will provide munitions that have a reduced “dud rate,” meaning there will be far fewer unexploded rounds that can result in unintended civilian deaths.

U.S. officials said Thursday they expect the military aid to Ukraine will be announced on Friday.

In the case of sending cluster munitions to Kiev, the United States will focus on more efficient ones – they will take into account their activation rate during tests, a Pentagon spokesman said.

It is not the first time Ukraine is using the prohibited cluster munitions. In 2014 the Ukrainian army was using them against the residents of Donbass, who stood up to the Nazi coup d’etat that USA conducted in Ukraine that year.

I mentioned it in this blog in one of the first 2014 posts on the The Unreported War in Ukraine, where I linked to a report at RusVesna:

Ukraine again used cluster bombs against civilians of Lugansk. People went out filming the chutes of the falling bombs, thinking it was aid.

This usage was documented by Human Rights Watch:

Ukraine: Widespread Use of Cluster Munitions

(Berlin) – Ukrainian government forces used cluster munitions in populated areas in Donetsk city in early October 2014, Human Rights Watch said today. The use of cluster munitions in populated areas violates the laws of war due to the indiscriminate nature of the weapon and may amount to war crimes.

During a week-long investigation in eastern Ukraine, Human Rights Watch documented widespread use of cluster munitions in fighting between government forces and pro-Russian rebels in more than a dozen urban and rural locations. While it was not possible to conclusively determine responsibility for many of the attacks, the evidence points to Ukrainian government forces’ responsibility for several cluster munition attacks on Donetsk. An employee of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was killed on October 2 in an attack on Donetsk that included use of cluster munition rockets.
