Being a kullen birdwatcher back in the seventies and
a summer inhabitant of the heath on the opposite side
of the bay for 20 years I know something about the
real birds of the area. May I propose that for a
national bird (maybe) we pick a bird that is a nomad
during autumn and winter, the Sula bassana (Havssulan,
the Gannet). With determination and majestic elegance
it scans the foaming waves of a furious sea laughing
at the howling storms scourgeing Mare Jenny in autumn.
Sometimes it will cross our sea to seek out its in-
habitants of glittering fish. When it spots a school
of herrings it will plunge into the sea and fill the
belly until it cannot fly because of the weight. It
is white as the foam of the waves it challenges but
the hand of the wing is black, burnt by the sun when
it flew too high into the sky to be able to spot all
the herrings of the world. Its yellow crown reminds
us that it is the queen/king of fishermen.
