Now this was really a good question...
But who would know?
As I recall, in the old viking age, the females surname was that of
her fathers. I.e Thordis Asmundsdottir, as one example.
When the girl got married, she got the surname of her husband. But was
still recognized with her maiden name. I might remember wrongly...
